How Tempo works

Your investments guided by our expertise

What is guided investing?

At Tempo, guided investing means proactive and ongoing advice throughout your investing journey. This starts with a recommended mix of funds based on your investor type, your goal, and how you plan to invest. As you progress towards your goals, we'll provide recommended updates to our advice. These recommendations could be based on changes you make to your goal or movements in the market. Sometimes, we'll make a recommendation based on the latest advice from our experts.

Why guided investing?

At Tempo, we want to take the hassle and worry out of where to invest your money. We simplify the investment process by providing advice tailored to your financial goals and risk tolerance.

Why do my investments need to change over time?

Once you’ve created a plan, we will recommend a mix of funds to keep you on track.

While we do a lot of the heavy lifting for you, from time to time, we will send you a recommended update. for you to review and accept. It helps balance the risk and reward you’re taking at a particular time. There are three key drivers that will prompt a recommended update from us:

If your investments drift too far from what we recommend.

Markets are always moving and changing. Some investments may grow faster than others, shifting your fund mix away from what we recommend. To keep your investments aligned with your goals, we monitor your fund mix daily. If it drifts too far from the target, we’ll send you a recommended update to bring it back to what we recommend for your investor type and goal. For example, if global funds were meant to be 30% but grow quickly and now make up 40%, we’ll suggest an update to restore the 30%.

If the timeline of your goal changes.

Time is also a key factor in your recommended fund mix. If we estimate you have a longer-term horizon to reach your goal it gives you more time to ride out the ups and downs of markets. For shorter term goals, it’s important not to take too much risk. As your goals get closer, we’ll make recommendations to gradually switch your investments towards lower risk investments.

If the Tempo Investment Committee (TIC) makes a change.

One of the benefits of investing with Tempo is that we have a team of experts behind our investment advice to help make your money work hard for you. At least every two months the TIC meets to review the settings that underpin the recommendations you receive from Tempo. From time-to-time these reviews will see Tempo recommend changing your fund mix.

The only other time you may get a recommendation to change your fund mix is if you make a change to your goal plan or change your investor type.

The role of the Tempo Investment Committee

Our team of experts regularly reviews the market and economic conditions and the settings that underpin the fund mix recommendations you receive from Tempo. Sometimes, they adjust the balance of assets like stocks, bonds, or cash or the mix of growth funds to take advantage of market opportunities. This flexible approach, called tactical asset allocation, allows us to adapt to, or take advantage of, market changes. The goal is to improve returns and reduce risk, as opposed to sticking with a fixed strategy. This is just one area of expertise the TIC brings to Tempo.

For example, in the wake of Covid-19 when we saw a large amount of government stimulus and interest rates at historic lows, we tilted portfolios toward growth assets such as stocks which stood to benefit from low interest rates and a pick up in economic growth - An example from our experts, who also advise on Forsyth Barr client portfolios.

What this means for Tempo customers

As part of guided investing with Tempo, we regularly monitor how your fund mix is tracking against your goals. We will occasionally recommend changing your fund mix to help ensure you’re on track. You will get an app notification and email when an update is available for your fund mix. It’s up to you to accept these recommended changes in the app.

You can choose to not accept a recommendation if you don’t think the time is right. If you choose to not accept a recommendation then your current fund mix may no longer be optimal. If you don’t respond to, or don’t accept a recommendation from us, we won’t make any changes to your fund mix.
